PA leader Abbas to discuss Jerusalem issue with Saudi leadersSaudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman are expected to meet with Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas in Riyadh on Tuesday. According to a PA official, the three will discuss the United States’ decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas will fly to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday for an official visit during which he will meet with Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.
Bassam al-Agha, who serves as the PA’s envoy to Riyadh, said that Abbas will discuss the United States’ decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital with the Saudi leaders, according to the PA’s official news agency Wafa. US President Donald Trump’s Jerusalem announcement was condemned by both Saudi Arabia and Abbas.
News agencies around the world recently reported that Saudi Arabia has been pressuring Abbas to accept a US-drafted peace proposal. However, al-Agha dismissed the reports during a radio interview this morning, saying that they are part of an attempt to undermine the PA’s relations with Saudi Arabia.
On Monday, 14 UN Security Council member states voted in favor of a draft resolution demanding that any country’s decision to change Jerusalem’s current status quo be rescinded. However, the US vetoed the resolution, using its veto power for the first time in six years.
“From now on, we are opposed to the United States being a mediator or a partner in the peace process,” Abbas said ahead of the UNSC vote from Ramallah. “We are determined to go once more and even several times more to the UN to receive the status of full membership in the organization.”
