On Wednesday, PA President Mahmoud Abbas pardoned an officer who was sentenced to a year in prison after he criticized the Palestinian leader for attending Shimon Peres’ funeral.

A court in the West Bank sentenced the officer, Osama Mansour, to a year in prison, citing that he violated the military code of conduct when he expressed his political opinion. In addition, it was determined that he will be discharged from the army.

However, a senior level PA official said that Abbas decided to reduce the severity of the officer’s sentence. “The president issued an amnesty decree in favor of Mansour and the officer will be sent into [early] retirement,” the senior level source told Reuters.
