Arab media outlets cover Peres’ passing; Abbas sends condolencesPalestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas sent his condolences to the family of Israel’s 9th President, who passed away earlier this morning. “Peres was a brave partner for making peace,” Abbas stated. Meanwhile, Arab news agencies have been covering Peres’ passing but in a less flattering manner compared to their Western counterparts.
After many world leaders sent their condolences to Shimon Peres’ family, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas expressed his regret over the passing of Israel’s 9th President. “Peres was a brave partner for making peace along with [Yasser] Arafat and [Yitzhak] Rabin,” wrote Abbas in a special letter.
A Palestinian news agency reported that Abbas sent the letter to Peres’ family. It was reported that in the letter, Abbas expressed his condolences and said that Peres made many intensive efforts in order to achieve peace since the Oslo Accords and until his last moments.
In addition, many other Arab news agencies covered the passing of Israel’s 9th President and dedicated a considerable amount of air time to recalling his life. However, the coverage on the Arab news agencies was much less flattering compared to the reports that were featured in the West.
The Lebanese Al Mayadeen news agency, which is affiliated with Hezbollah, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Iran, broadcasted a segment this morning documenting the main actions and causes promoted by Peres. The segment even mentioned that Israel’s 9th President was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 but mainly highlighted the Qana massacre, which occurred in Lebanon during Operation Grapes of Wrath when Peres was serving as prime minister. Dozens of Lebanese civilians were killed in the incident.
As reported earlier today by JOL, Al Jazeera noted Peres’ passing. However, the Arab media outlet chose to attack the former prime minister and president’s actions. “He is best remembered as part of a Labour Zionist elite responsible for the creation of a Jewish state in 1948 on the ruins of the Palestinian homeland,” read one Al Jazeera article about Peres’ death. In addition, Al Jazeera called Peres an “architect of the Israeli aggression.”
