British government funds Palestinian schools teaching hatred, martyrdom—report

UK taxpayers are paying the salaries of 33,000 Palestinian teachers who have been implementing a new curriculum that educates children to embrace jihad and martyrdom, according to the Sunday Times. The new textbooks portray Israel as the “Zionist Occupation” and exert “pressure over young Palestinians to acts of violence,” a watchdog group found.

London gave £20 million (over $24.6 million) last year to Palestinian educational institutes that teach a curriculum that a watchdog group claims places an emphasis on jihad and encourages martyrdom, the Sunday Times reported.

According to a report by the Institute for Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance in School Education (IMPACT-se), which monitors the content of school textbooks in the Middle East, the Palestinian Authority’s current curriculum for grades 5-11 demonizes Israel, mostly labeling it the “Zionist Occupation.” In addition, the textbooks exert “pressure over young Palestinians to acts of violence.”

The report showed that violence is even embedded into science textbooks. “A science textbook teaches Newtonian gravity through the image of a boy with a slingshot targeting soldiers, to explain power, mass, and tensile strength,” IMPACT-se wrote in the report. “An eleventh-grade physics textbook teaches circular motion through the use of a slingshot in another clash with IDF soldiers.”

“Radicalization is pervasive across this new curriculum, to a greater extent than before,” the watchdog group concluded. “This version of the PA curriculum educates for a long war of attrition against Israel which stands out as the axis mundi of Palestinian identity, connecting its various dimensions into one ideology. With a comprehensive and oft-stated justification for defensive (obligatory) jihad, the curriculum's focus appears to have expanded from demonization of Israel to providing a rationale for war.”

Speaking to the UK parliament last week, Minister of State for International Development Alistair Burt said that British taxpayers are paying the salaries of 33,000 Palestinian teachers who have been implementing the new curriculum, the Times reported. Burt stated that “all of their schools in the West Bank are using the revised 2017 PA curriculum. UK-funded public servants and teachers . . . are therefore involved.”
