Ceasefire in Syria, mortars in the Golan Heights

While the ceasefire in Syria has officially come into effect, it seems that the fighting is continuing in the divided country, as a mortar shell landed this evening in the Golan Heights. No injuries were reported.

At sundown this evening (Monday), the ceasefire between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s army and most of the rebel forces in Syria came into effect. Outside of Aleppo, dozens of trucks packed with humanitarian aid are waiting in hope that soon, they will be able to enter the city. Over the past five years, the bloody Syrian civil war has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of Syrians and millions have become refugees.

The convoy of trucks came from Turkey under the supervision of UN representatives. Inside the trucks are shipments of food, medical supplies, blankets and tents. “After sunset, food, clothes and toys will start to flow into [Syria] under the protection of the ceasefire,” said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan earlier today in Istanbul.

The main question that is occupying the sides right now is whether the ceasefire will last. Assad’s army only stopped bombing targets in Aleppo a few minutes before the ceasefire came into effect. Earlier today, JOL reported that Assad sent a strong message to the rebel forces during a visit in Daraya.

Meanwhile, a mortar landing was detected in the Golan Heights this evening around 21:00PM Israel time. Head of the Golan Regional Council Eli Malka addressed the incident, stating that “there is no difference between shooting that spills over and intentional shooting. The bomb is the same bomb and puts lives in danger. It is the responsibility of Israel’s Defense Minister and the IDF to send a clear message to all the elements involved on the other side of the border that any landing of a shell or mortar shell in the Golan will be considered intentional shooting towards Israel and the IDF will respond in full force in order to destroy the sources of the fire and harm the forces in charge of them.”
