Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has been elected for a second term after winning almost 92% of votes, according to preliminary election results reported on local media.
The state-run daily newspaper al-Ahram reported that about 25 million people turned out to vote out of 60 million registered voters. This is a lower turnout than in the previous elections in 2014. Mostafa Mousa, el-Sisi's only challenger, received just under 3% of the votes.
El-Sisi was first elected in 2014, a year after leading a military coup as the army's Chief of Staff that overthrew Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood.
