What challenges will Erdogan face with his newly expanded powers?

He has been serving as the Turkish president for two years already, but Erdogan has just received the people’s approval to anchor his rule in the constitution and change the system of government. Despite the opposing voices, Erdogan has promised to lead Turkey forward and to respond to all the problems that the country faces.

Although he received a narrow 51.3% majority vote, the Turks voted in favor of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s request yesterday (Sunday) and from now on, he will be an all-powerful leader. After winning the constitutional referendum which grants him sweeping powers, Erdogan is replacing the Turkish parliament with an all-powerful presidency allotting him control over the government, courts and military.

The constitutional amendment supported by 25 million Turks is a historic vote. Since being voted as president two years ago, Erdogan has been ruling the country in a manner which contrasts Turkish law. Therefore, he felt the need to receive the nation’s approval in order to amend the constitution and change the governmental system to an all-powerful presidency, however without the checks and balances that the US governmental system has.

“For the first time in the history of the Republic, we are changing our ruling system through civil politics,” Erdogan said last night in reference to the military coups which have been occurring in Turkey for decades.
