Former President of Iran Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani passed away today (Sunday) after he was rushed to the hospital when he was in critical condition after suffering a heart disease, as reported by Iranian media outlets.

A message that was sent to the press stated, "Ayatollah Rafsanjani was hospitalized in Teheran after suffering a heart disease."

82-year-old Rafsanjani was President of the Islamic Republic between the years 1989-1997. In 2005 he attempted to run for the third time but lost to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The former president was an important figure in Iran. He stood as Chairmen of the Expediency Discernment Council, a political organization that is supposed to solve conflicts between the parliament and the Guardian Council.

Rafsanjani spoke against Israel on various occasions and hasn't rejected the notion of using nuclear weapons between the countries. In 2001 he said, "The use of a nuclear bomb against Israel will completely eliminate it whereas the same use against the Islamic world will only cause conceivable damage."
