On Wednesday, Egypt opened the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza for the first time in 2018, allowing Gazans to enter Egypt. It is still unknown what prompted the Egyptian authorities to open the border crossing in both directions.

According to various reports, the Palestinian Authority’s embassy in Cairo has explained that the Rafah border is opened temporarily a few times a year and usually for not an extended period of time. The border crossing is expected to close on Friday evening.

Egypt generally keeps the border sealed in order to combat the flow of terrorists into the country. For the past several years, Cairo has been battling terrorist groups in Sinai.

Today’s opening of the crossing comes shortly after the Gaza humanitarian and economic crises were discussed among Israeli and Palestinian officials. As previously reported by JOL, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot recently stated that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza could have repercussions that lead to a war with Israel.
