More than a week after several Gulf states, Egypt and Libya declared a boycott on Qatar, Iran has come to the aid of its ally in distress. The AFP news agency reported that at least five Iranian cargo planes with food arrived in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

This is the second time that the Iranians have fulfilled their promise over the last week to provide Qatar with the goods its residents lack due to the boycott by its neighbors, primarily Saudi Arabia. For the past few days, the small country has been forced to rely on the supply of basic goods from other countries.

According to reports in Iran, each of the planes carried 90 tons of food, while additional planes are preparing to make their way to the country.

The Qatar-based Al-Jazeera network claims that the Gulf Cooperation Council will file lawsuits against Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt for collective punishment and international crimes.

The growing tension in the Persian Gulf is keeping the international community busy given its explosive potential in the region. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu discussed ways to resolve the crisis last night. While Turkey wants the boycott on Qatar to be immediately lifted, the United States has asked Saudi Arabia and Egypt to ease the prohibitions in order to prevent a humanitarian crisis.
