Hours before the ceasefire in Syria is supposed to go into effect, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad arrived at a mosque in Daraya, a town that was recaptured by his forces a month ago. During his visit, Assad delivered a harsh message that only increases the doubts regarding the ceasefire’s chances of success.

Assad arrived in Daraya for a prayer service marking Eid al-Adha, the Festival of the Sacrifice. During his visit, Assad met with religious leaders including Grand Mufti Sheikh Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun.

Assad said in a statement: “The Syrian government is committed to liberating all the areas that were taken over by the terrorists and restoring them.

According to the agreement, which was announced on Friday by the US and Russia, the sides will put down their weapons this evening in order to allow the civilians to receive the humanitarian aid they desperately need.
