Some 200 people were killed after a military plane crashed in Algeria on Wednesday. Local authorities told reporters that several passengers were extracted from the burning wreckage.
The crash occurred after takeoff from an airbase southwest of Algiers. The aircraft, a Soviet-designed Ilyushin Il-76, was reportedly headed for Bechar in southwest Algeria carrying 200 passengers. Local media said some 300 emergency workers were currently at the scene.
The circumstances that led to the deadly crash remain unknown, Algerian media said. The aircraft had apparently crashed in an agricultural area.
