PA announces: Payments for Gaza electricity will stop immediatelyThe Palestinian Authority announced today that it will stop paying for the electricity Israel provides to Gaza. Hamas will now have to turn to the international community for help.
The crisis between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas continues. This morning (Thursday), the PA announced that it will immediately stop paying for the electricity that Israel provides to Gaza. Associates of PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas informed IDF Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) Major General Yoav Mordechai of the dramatic decision.
The monthly cost of Gaza’s electricity consumption is estimated at 40 million NIS (almost $11 million), which Israel deducts from the PA taxes. Once the PA stops paying for Gaza’s electricity, Hamas will most likely need to turn to the international community and private pro-Palestinian individuals and ask for help.
As of today, Israel provides Gaza with electricity via 10 power lines, which produce 125 megawatts of electricity. This amount is about 30% of the electricity that Gaza requires. 400 megawatts would be required to provide Gaza with 24-hour electricity.
In the beginning of April, Mordechai warned of an upcoming electricity crisis in Gaza. “The crisis is approaching and the responsibility lies with the Hamas terror organization,” he said in a statement.
