American delegation evacuated from Ramallah due to Palestinian protestersUS officials were evacuated from a Ramallah research center this afternoon because of Palestinians who were protesting their presence outside of the building. As they were being escorted out, the protesters threw vegetables and eggs at them, according to a Palestinian media correspondent.
Palestinians gathered in Ramallah on Thursday to protest against the presence of an American delegation. According to the Palestinian PNN media outlet, the delegation members were evacuated from the research facility in the city where they were attending an event due to the protest.
The protesters were reportedly carrying Palestinian flags and holding signs condemning the United States. “The US is part of the problem, not the solution,” one of the signs read in English.
According to the PNN correspondent who was covering the protest, Palestinian security personnel escorted the delegation members out of the research center as the protesters threw eggs and vegetables at them.
The Palestinians were protesting against US President Donald Trump’s declaration recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and decision to cut funding for UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees. Trump’s December 6 recognition of Jerusalem sparked outrage around the world and has been cited as the reason behind countless riots and clashes on the Palestinian streets of the West Bank and along the Israeli-Gazan border.
Last month, US diplomats who were visiting the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce and Industry had to cut their visit short after violent Palestinian protesters stormed the venue. Aside from holding up posters and chanting anti-American slogans in Arabic, the angry Palestinian mob damaged an American diplomatic vehicle as it attempted to leave the scene.
The U.S. State Department commented on the incident, saying: “The United States opposes the use of violence and intimidation to express political views. This non-political program was one part of long-term U.S. engagement to create economic opportunities for Palestinians.”
