Putin hosts Iranian, Turkish leaders in Syria-focused peace summitToday, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with his Iranian and Turkish counterparts in Sochi to discuss the future of Syria. According to Putin, all sides will need to compromise.
Today (Wednesday), Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted his Iranian and Turkish counterparts in the city of Sochi. “We’ve reached a new phase in Syria,” Putin stated. “In order to reach a political solution all sides will need to compromise, including the Assad administration.”
Putin thanked Turkish President Recep Erdogan and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani for their contribution in Syria and preventing the fall of the country in the hands of ISIS. Rouhani stated that all foreign powers that haven’t been invited by the Syrian government must leave immediately, although he didn’t clarify which powers he was referring to.
The leaders promised to make critical decisions during the summit. Earlier this week, Putin met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. During the discreet meeting, Putin congratulated Assad on his “accomplishments in the fight against terrorism” and Assad explained that the Russian military aid “saved Syria.”
The Russian leader also spoke with US President Donald Trump about the crisis. “There was discussion of the need to preserve the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Syria,” the Kremlin stated. “And to achieve a political settlement on the basis of principles that must be worked out as a result of the broadest possible intra-Syrian negotiation process.”
