Abdel Fattah el-Sisi wins Egypt election with over 90% of votes, state media saysAs Votes are being counted in Egypt following the three-day election in the country, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is slated to serve a second term as president after he had reportedly won over 90% of the vote, Egyptian state media claimed.
Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was reelected as Egypt's president, Egyptian state media reported as preliminary results came in on Thursday. Although the official results are expected to be announced on Monday, the former military commander is already slated to serve a second term.
Reports by international media have claimed that voters were being bribed to cast their ballots during the three-day vote, as authorities feared a low turnout. In a post on his Twitter account on Wednesday, the Egyptian president commended the long lines of Egyptians seen at the ballot boxes and said they served as a “compelling proof” of the country’s greatness.
Sisi overthrew former president Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood in a 2013 uprising in the country. His sole opponent in the current election, Moussa Mostafa Moussa, was claimed by many to be a “dummy” candidate and was viewed as the government’s effort to maintain the appearance of democracy.
