Yasser Murtaja, the Palestinian journalist who was allegedly killed by IDF fire along the Gaza border last weekend, was actually a Hamas terrorist, Israeli security officials told Walla! News on Tuesday. According to the report, Murtaja was a high-ranking member of the terrorist group’s security establishment in the coastal enclave.

The unnamed security officials were quoted as saying that Murtaja carried out “daily tasks as a member of the group’s security apparatus and considerably contributed to its activities.” They added that Murtaja had been working with Hamas for years and that many Hamas members attended his funeral.

Murtaja died on Friday night after succumbing to the injuries he sustained earlier in the day. The Palestinian media circulated pictures of the injured 30-year-old Khan Yunis resident wearing a press jacket. In response to the incident, the IDF clarified that it does not target journalist and said that it will investigate the claims that Murtaja died due to Israeli fire.
