The Syrian regime raised its flag in the last rebel-held enclave of eastern Ghouta and has established full control of besieged Douma, according to Russian news agencies. The regime’s victory follows the reported chemical attack on the town, widely believed to be carried out by Bashar al-Assad’s forces.

Head of Russia's Center for Syrian Reconciliation Yury Yevtushenko told reporters on Thursday that Assad’s forces have effectively “regained control” of the Damascus suburb after the last members of the Jaysh al-Islam rebel group evacuated the area. On Sunday, the Syrian government said it was prepared to negotiate with the group.

According to additional reports in Russian media, Moscow’s military police has deployed in Douma following the regime’s takeover. “They are the guarantors of law and order in the town,” the Russian Defense Ministry was quoted as saying.
