Saudi Arabia executes 6 in one day, bringing 2017 total to 44

Saudi Arabia executed five Saudi nationals and a Pakistani man on Monday for drug trafficking and homicide, setting the highest number of executions carried out in one single day in the Arab country this year.

On Monday, Saudi Arabia executed six people, setting the highest number of executions for one single day in the Arab country this year. The Saudi Interior Ministry stated that a Pakistani was executed for drug offenses. The other five were Saudis who were convicted of homicide.  

The six executions bring the total number of carried out Saudi death penalties in 2017 to 44, according to the AFP. Earlier this year, an Amnesty International report year revealed that Saudi Arabia executed 154 people in 2016, a slight drop from the 2014 record number of 158 executions.

The same Amnesty International report revealed that in 2016, a total of 856 executions were carried out in the Middle East. 66% of them took place in Iran.
