Following the success of the online #StandWithKarim campaign in solidarity with wounded Syrian baby Karim Abd al-Rahman, Syrian rebel groups continue with their efforts to raise global awareness to the crisis in the eastern Ghouta region.  This time, it is the story of Qassem, an injured toddler who lost his mother in an airstrike.

The life of 2-year-old Qassem were saved after he underwent a tricky surgical procedure in difficult conditions. Qassem can’t eat without a feeding tube and is in need of additional surgery. In a video that has gone viral on social media, Qassem’s father describes the harsh conditions and the need of international aid to evacuate injured children from eastern Ghouta to an equipped hospital.

According to various reports, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Wednesday that it began the evacuation of those in critical medical conditions from eastern Ghouta to Damascus for treatment.
