Syrian President Bashar al-Assad congratulated his army on breaching the ISIS siege on the eastern part of Deir ez-Zor. The siege on the city in eastern Syria began in 2014, lasting for about three years. Hezbollah forces fought alongside the Syrian Army in the operation.

According to the state-run SANA news agency, the civilians who were freed from the besieged city celebrated the success of the operation even though the murderous terrorist organization continues to rule in most of the parts of the city.

In 2013, a group of rebels took over the city. In 2014, ISIS gained control over most of the parts in the city and the government-held enclave. The living conditions of the residents since ISIS took over were described by the UN as extremely difficult.
