Watch: The situation in Yemen deteriorates
As the bloody war in Yemen continues, the situation in the country deteriorates. UN observers who recently visited the country reported that 5,000 people a day are infected with cholera. According to their estimates, there are over 200,000 suspected cases of the disease in the country.
"This is because of conflict,” said Stephen O'Brien, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs. “It’s man-made. It’s very severe, the numbers are absolutely staggering [and] it’s getting worse.”

“Yemen is now facing the worst cholera outbreak in the world,” a UN statement read. “Already more than 1,300 people have died – one quarter of them children – and the death toll is expected to rise.” Human rights organizations operating in Yemen are pointing the finger at Saudi Arabia and Iran, which continue to supply the sides with ammunition instead of helping to resolve the conflict.
United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Executive Director Anthony Lake said that his organization is working with the World Health Organization (WHO) in order to prevent the disease from spreading any further. However, he added that this task is difficult because the “collapsing health, water and sanitation systems have cut off 14.5 million people from regular access to clean water and sanitation.”
The current round of the Yemen civil war began in 2015 when the Houthi rebels, who are backed by Hezbollah and Iran, took over the capital city of Sana’a. The government, which had no choice but to flee, is attempting to take back the city with the help of Saudi Arabia. In addition, terrorist organizations such as al-Qaeda and ISIS are taking advantage of the chaos in the country and gaining control over more and more parts of the country.
