At least 15 mortar shells were fired at IDF soldiers who were conducting engineering works near the northern Gaza border on Thursday. The IDF retaliated by striking four terror targets in the Gaza Strip using jets and tanks.

A Palestinian group linked to Hamas has quoted an anonymous security official as saying that the attack was done by "the resistance," a term used to refer to several terrorist organizations operating in Gaza.

"The shooting from Gaza is proof that (Palestinian Authority leader) Abbas' presence there is no more than a fig leaf trying to cover the existence of armed terror groups," said Israeli Transport Minister Yisarel Katz. "Israel will continue to hold Hamas responsible and will act as needed in order to protect itself."

A red alert siren was sounded in several Israeli towns surrounding the Gaza Strip.
