Religious women serve in the IDF despite backlash
In just 4 years: Increase of 400% in female IDF combat soldiersIn just four years, there has been a serious increase in young women volunteering to serve in the IDF in combat roles. This drastic increase has not gone unnoticed within the Israeli military as the IDF has already started to manufacture bullet-proof vests and helmets more suitable for women.
Over the past four years, there has been an increase of almost 400% in women who have volunteered for combat IDF positions. In 2012, 264 female soldiers were serving in combat positions and by 2016, the number rose to 1,037. In light of this trend, the IDF has decided to start manufacturing personal combat equipment, such as bullet-proof vests and helmets, for women.
Meanwhile, a fourth co-ed border protection unit is about to finish its training. This unit, just like the three other co-ed border protection units, is made up of 60% female soldiers and 40% male soldiers. In addition, there has been a drastic increase in the number of young religious women who want to enlist in the army as surveillance operators.
