Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman has called on Raabi Yigal Levinstein, the head of the pre-army religious academy in the West Bank settlement of Eli, to resign from his position following derogatory remarks he made last week about religious women who choose to join the IDF.

"I was strongly disappointed to hear your lewd remarks," Lieberman wrote Levinstein in a letter, "especially since there have been numerous incidents in the past in which you made similar remarks about other parts of the Israeli population who serve in the army." By that, Lieberman was referring to comments Levinstein made last year about the LGBT community.

Lieberman added that if Levinstein refuses to resign, his ministry will stop recognizing his yeshiva as a pre-army academy.

In response, Education Minister Naftali Bennett defended the yeshiva and said Lieberman's threat was made "for political reasons." "The last thing Lieberman cares about is the IDF's female soldiers," Bennett wrote on Facebook. "He simply seeks to take advantage of the religious Zionist movement for political gain."
