Central Command chief Maj. Gen. Roni Numa awarded the late Tuvia Yanai Weissman a citation for his bravery and personal example when he fought two terrorists with his own bare hands during a stabbing attack at the Rami Levi supermarket in the Sha’ar Binyamin industrial park last February. His widow Yael received the honor in his name.

On February 18, 2016, two terrorists carrying knives entered the supermarket. The terrorists attacked one of the workers, moderately injuring him. Weissman, his wife and their baby daughter were in the grocery store during the attack. When Weissman, an off-duty combat soldier who was unarmed at the time, heard the worker crying out as well as shouts in Arabic, he immediately understood that there was a terror attack.

“Staff Sergeant Weissman didn’t think twice and ran towards the screams as he left alone his wife and baby daughter,” said Numa. “After he saw the attack, Staff Sergeant Weissman didn’t hesitate and with his bare hands, he attacked the two terrorists. [He] fought with them and tried to stop them.”

During the struggle, Weissman was fatally injured. Civilians who were at the scene shot and eliminated the terrorists. The medical teams that arrived on the scene tried to save Weissman but were left with no choice but to pronounce him dead.

“Although I wasn’t surprised by your heroic action, as the time goes by since the same day you gave your soul to save others and as I think more and more about your heroic act, it seems incomprehensible,” said Yael during the ceremony. “You had so much strength, Yanai, in order to carry out this act, to leave everything, your young child Neta and me in order to save lives, to run into the unknown and not hesitate when you had nothing in your hands besides the strength of your soul.”
