Elor Azaria possibly to be released to await appeal hearing under house arrestToday, the military court will decide whether Elor Azaria, who has been found guilty for shooting and killing a neutralized and unarmed Palestinian terrorist, will be released to await the court hearing under house arrest or remain under military arrest.
This month, the decision regarding Elor Azaria’s appeal of his conviction of manslaughter and 18-month imprisonment sentence will be reached by the court. In addition, the court will answer the IDF prosecutor’s appeal that demanded a heavier sentence.
Azaria, who is currently under ‘open arrest’ in a military base, is supposed to be discharged from the military this week. Today (Monday), it will be decided whether he will be released to await the court hearing under house arrest or remain under military arrest.
Azaria has been under military arrest since the terrorist attack in Hebron at the end of March 2016, when he fatally shot the neutralized and unarmed terrorist. He appealed his sentence through his attorney Yoram Sheftel, who claimed that other soldiers who operated in a similar manner didn’t receive a similar punishment.
At the end of June, Azaria collapsed during first sergeant duties on base. As reported last month by JOL, after the IDF military court judges recommended the defense team meet with the IDF prosecution in mediation, grave differences between the two parties became evident and no mutual agreement was reached. As a result, the soldier’s fate lies in the judges’ hands who will rule in court.
