For the first time in the history of the IDF: A woman will command a flight squadron in the Israel Air Force

The commander of the Israeli Air Force , Major General Amikam Norkin, announced today the appointment of Major G., as commander of the 122th Squadron.

For the first time in histoty, a woman was named to head a flight squadron in the Israel Air Force. The 122th Squadron, formerly known as the Dakota Squadron, is an intelligence gathering squadron of the Israel Air Force, which operates the Nachshon-Gulfstream GV aircraft.

Major G., 34, will be promoted to lieutenant colonel. In 2003, she enlisted in a pilot course and completed her career as a transport pilot. At the end of the course, she was assigned to the 135th Squadron, operating the Tzofit, Hofit and Kukia planes.

She later moved to the 131st Squadron and filled a variety of command positions at the Flight School and the 135th Squadron. Between the years 2015 – 2017 Major G. served as deputy commander of Squadron 122, to which she will now return as it’s commander.

Major G. expressed joy over the appointment and said that "this is a great privilege, alongside a great responsibility, and I am proud to serve in the air force." said an undisclosed IDF officer.
