About half a year after he was convicted of manslaughter, Elor Azaria entered the IDF Prison 4 on Wednesday morning in order to begin his 18-month sentence. Earlier today, he left his home in Ramla, which is located about 10 minutes from the prison, accompanied by dozens of supporters, who shouted: “Elor is a hero.”

After the short ride, Azaria and his family entered the gates of the prison. After Azaria says goodbye to his family and girlfriend, he will head to the intake area for new inmates, where he will hand in his personal items and receive his prisoner uniform.

Sources associated with the Prison 4 facility said that the prison guards and prisoners are excited about the arrival of the “famous prisoner.” However, they stressed that even through Azaria is almost considered a celebrity, he will not receive any special treatment. “He will receive the same treatment as all the other prisoners,” they said, adding that he will have to carry out the same tasks, such as manual labor, and participate in the same activities as his fellow inmates.

After 10 days, Azaria’s parents will be able to visit him as long as he follows the rules of the prison from now and until then. Prisoners can receive parental visits once every two weeks. Unless IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot approves his request for a more lenient sentence, Azaria will only be granted furlough after he serves at least a third of his sentence.

As reported by JOL yesterday evening, Azaria’s friends and family held a party in his honor. In footage from last night’s party, Azaria and his friends are seen dancing and celebrating, releasing black and yellow balloons into the air - the colors of his favorite soccer team, Beitar Jerusalem.
