Hebron shooting trial: Former head of leading Israeli forensic institute testified for defenseIt was a dramatic day on Thursday at the military court in Jaffa as the former head of the Abu Kabir Forensic Institute testified for the defense in the trial against IDF soldier Elor Azaria. Azaria is standing trial for manslaughter after he shot a neutralized terrorist in Hebron several months ago. According to the former head of the institute, the terrorist was dead before Azaria shot him.
Former head of the Abu Kabir Forensic Institute Prof. Yehuda Hiss testified for the defense in the trial against IDF soldier Elor Azaria on Thursday at the military court in Jaffa. Hiss spoke out against the management of the institute that he once headed. “I don’t know when the terrorist died,” said Hiss. “However, I know that when the bullet hit his head, he was already dead.”
Hiss was questioned on Thursday by the prosecution after he submitted his expert report to the court. Hiss stressed that while he was not present during the autopsy and never saw the terrorist’s body, his conclusions are based on the data from the autopsy and the knowledge he accumulated over the years.
During his testimony, Hiss claimed that the doctors performed an “amateur and not professional” autopsy. Hiss added that because this case holds great political and social importance, it was expected of the autopsy team members to perform their job in the most professional manner.
The military prosecutor, Lieutenant Colonel (Res.) Nadav Weisman, questioned Hiss for almost 5 hours. However, Hiss continue to state his conclusion that Azaria’s gunshot did not kill the terrorist. “I know that when the bullet hit the terrorist’s head, he was already dead,” stated Hiss.
