An Israeli Air Force pilot was killed on Wednesday when his fighter jet crashed during a routine landing in southern Israel.

Initial reports indicate that the two-seat F-16 crashed just seconds before touching the ground due to an unknown technical problem. The pilot and the navigator then decided to abandon the aircraft, but the pilot did not survive the fall. The navigator suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital by helicopter.

The IAF commander has formed a commission of inquiry into the incident.
