Israeli residents living near the Gaza border reported today (Monday) that explosions were heard in the area. Shortly thereafter, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit confirmed that the IDF had used explosives to demolish a terror tunnel that was found in Israel close to the Gaza Strip border in front of Khan Yunis. Hamas media outlets also confirmed the attack on the tunnel.

"The Southern Command carried out a planned explosion on a terror tunnel that was being built," the IDF Spokesperson's Unit said. “The tunnel was new and currently under construction, yet did not pose an immediate threat since it was discovered in time.”

"This is a blatant violation of Israeli sovereignty, a situation that cannot be accepted and in light of which, the IDF acted," the IDF stated. "The action was an operational success based on advanced technology. Locating terror tunnels is part of an extensive defense effort led by IDF forces since the end of Operation Protective Edge.”

"The IDF continues its activity through various available means and is constantly improving,” stated the IDF Spokesperson. “The Hamas terrorist organization is responsible for what is happening in and [originating] from the Gaza Strip. The IDF will continue to take all the measures at its disposal, above and below the ground, to thwart attempts to harm the residents of the State of Israel and to maintain the relative calm in the area attained after Operation Protective Edge. The IDF has no intention to destabilize the situation. However, we are prepared for a variety of scenarios.”

"I want to congratulate the IDF for its perfect performance that is the result of a significant technological breakthrough, which enables us to better cope with the tunnel threat," said Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman at the start of his party’s meeting today.

Lieberman added that "this was a flagrant disruption of sovereignty and all accepted rules, which proves that despite the Palestinian reconciliation, the Gaza Strip remains a realm of terror. As far as we are concerned, the responsibility is undoubtedly placed on Hamas as it controls Gaza. We are not interested in any escalation, but we have no intention of allowing our sovereignty to be violated.”
