Despite the fear that Gazan fishermen will try to harm Israeli Navy ships, the IDF has decided to expand the fishing zone off the coast of Gaza from six to nine nautical miles. The expansion of the zone will help increase the monthly income of the Palestinian fishermen.

Even though the expansion will mean more work for the Israeli Navy, the IDF decided to take into account the situation of the fishing industry in Gaza. The Israeli Navy ships will now need to cover a wider area off the coast of Gaza.

About 40,000 Palestinians in Gaza work in the fishing industry as fishermen, vendors and restaurant owners. In light of the harsh economic situation in Gaza, Israel is interested in making the lives of the Palestinian civilians easier when possible.
