In an overnight operation, the IDF successfully foiled an attempt by Hamas to rebuild a terror tunnel into southern Israel, the IDF Spokesperson's Unit said Sunday. A second tunnel was destroyed in an IAF air strike.

According to the IDF, it had known for a while about Hamas' attempt to rebuild the tunnel near the Kerem Shalom border crossing, which had been blown up in the past. This time, said IDF Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis, the army poured concrete into the tunnel from the Israeli side to make sure it can never be used again.

"The IDF operated in its own territory to protect its citizens and its sovereignty," the army said. "The operation is not meant to aggravate the situation, though we are fully prepared for many scenarios."

Israel's Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said the successful operation was "based on high-quality intelligence and groundbreaking technology."

"Those who thought they could harm us from underground have run into a wall of iron," Lieberman said. "Hamas has invested billions in his tunnels project and now they are drowned in the sand. I would suggest to Hamas to invest the money in welfare for the citizens of Gaza, because its tunnels project will be completely destroyed by the end of the year."
