The Israeli Defense Ministry announced on Thursday that Brig. Gen. Sharon Afek, the IDF Chief Military Advocate General, will be promoted to Major General (Aluf). This makes him the first openly-gay officer to achieve that rank.

According to the announcement, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman has accepted a request put forth by IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot to promote the IDF Chief Military Advocate General to Major General three years after assuming the position. This means Afek, who has held the position since 2015, will be promoted immediately.

Galia Wolloch, the chairwoman of Na'amat, an Israeli women's organization, praised the decision and said, "I wish for the day when a story like this isn't considered news."
