As Palestinians return to border, IDF vows to expand response

According to the IDF, it will not hesitate to expand its response to the violence along the Gaza border if terrorists continue to try to threaten Israel’s security. The Palestinian media claims that some 200 protesters have returned to the border where at least 16 people were killed yesterday.

The IDF warned on Saturday that if the violence along the Gaza border continues, Israel will expand its response and target those responsible for it. According to IDF spokesperson Ronen Manelis, the military’s response so far has been limited to the protesters who try to breach the border fence but the IDF will not hesitate to attack terrorists “in other places” if the attempts continue. Manelis added that all of the Palestinians who were killed in yesterday’s clashes were involved in the violence and attempts to tamper with the border fence.

Meanwhile, Palestinian media outlets claim that some 200 people have gathered near the border to continue yesterday’s protests. The reports state that IDF troops fired at the protesters near Khan Yunis, injuring two people.

On Friday, some 50,000 Palestinians marched toward the border and congregated in six different locations along the fence as part of the “March of Return.” Palestinians are claiming that at least 16 protesters were killed by Israeli fire and over 1,000 were injured.

The violence made international headlines and caught the attention of the United Nations. At Kuwait’s request, the UN Security Council held an emergency meeting Friday night, which was boycotted by Israel because it fell on Passover eve.

Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon issued a statement before the meeting, warning the international community not to be deceived by the Palestinian attempts to portray the “March of Return” as a peaceful event. “While Jews around the world gathered with their family at the Seder table to celebrate the Passover holiday, the Palestinians sunk to a new deceitful low so that they could use the UN to spread lies about Israel,” Danon stated. “This shameful exploitation of our holiday will not succeed in stopping us from speaking the truth about the Hamas terror gatherings that aim to destabilize the region.”
