Terror attack in Jerusalem: 2 police officers injured
IDF to officially recognize girlfriends of fallen soldiersOver the years, the girlfriends of fallen IDF soldiers have felt left behind and ignored by the military. After the girlfriends of IDF soldiers who were killed during Operation Protective Edge protested against the existing military protocols, the IDF has decided to implement a new policy that will officially recognize the non-married partners of fallen IDF soldiers.
Over the years, the IDF has improved its method of informing newly bereaved families about the tragic loss but the girlfriends of the same fallen soldiers have always felt left behind as the military has never recognized them.
However, this morning (Monday), Yedioth Ahronoth revealed that the IDF has announced a change in its policy and will from now on inform the girlfriend of a fallen soldier of the tragic loss and transport her to the home of the fallen soldier’s family. In addition, the IDF announced that if the girlfriend is also a soldier, she will be granted time off and be eligible for therapy.

The new policy was approved by Colonel Joslin Bash, the IDF’s new Casualties Department head. The change in policy comes after the girlfriends of soldiers who were killed during Operation Protective Edge united in order to get the military to change its protocols.
According to the new policy, the officials who inform the family of the tragic loss will ask the parents whether their son had a girlfriend. If they say yes, the IDF will help bring the girlfriend immediately to the home of the fallen soldier. If the girlfriend is a soldier, she will be informed by her direct commanders and they will arrange the transportation for her.
The new policy also states that if the girlfriend is a soldier, she will be eligible for days off from the army until the end of the seven-day mourning period. In addition, she will be granted leave on the 30-day remembrance day, the anniversary of her partner’s death and Israel’s Memorial Day for the Fallen Soldiers. Also, if the girlfriend is interested, her contact details will be given to the Non-Profit Organization for Emotional Support of Girlfriends (Fiancées) of Fallen Soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces.
