The Israeli Defense Ministry announced Sunday that it has launched the construction of an underwater barrier designed to prevent Gazan terrorists from infiltrating Israel via the Mediterranean.
The construction of the three-layer barrier is expected to be complete by the end of the year. The ministry decided to build the barrier, which is similar to a seawall, after terrorists tried to infiltrate Israel via the Mediterranean during Operation Protective Edge in 2014.
Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said that the barrier will weaken the strategic capabilities of Hamas in the coastal enclave. “This is the only barrier of its kind in the world,” he proclaimed. “We will continue to protect the citizens of Israel with strength and sophistication.”
While the 2014 maritime infiltration attempt was the immediate cause behind the decision to build the barrier, dozens of infiltration attempts and successful infiltrations have been carried out along the Israel-Gaza border fence in recent weeks. On Saturday, Hamas released a video documenting a successful infiltration that was carried out by four Palestinian terrorists.
In the footage, the terrorists can be seen cutting the bottom of the security fence with wire cutters and entering Israel. The four then split up, as two continue running deeper into Israeli territory and throw a Molotov cocktail that starts a fire. The other two terrorists stay behind to put up a Palestinian flag and pitch a green tent upon which were written the words: “The March of Return. We are returning to Palestinian lands.” All four terrorists then escape back into Gaza when an IDF patrol opened fire on them.
Hamas also released a second video on Saturday, which showed Palestinian rioters along the border fence throwing stones and Molotov cocktails, burning tires and flying flaming kites. A group of terrorists can also be seen attempting to damage the fence.
