A day after he demanded that the Israeli Education Ministry stop funding the paramilitary academy in Eli in response to Rabbi Yigal Levinstein’s remarks about female soldiers, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman clarified today (Thursday) that his demand has not changed. “It needs to be understood that female IDF service is something that has been the case since the establishment of the State of Israel,” said Lieberman during an interview with Army Radio.

“What Rabbi Levinstein said deeply harms the tradition in the IDF and the values in the IDF,” Lieberman continued. “It is inconceivable that someone who harms the values will also educate boys who will eventually serve in the IDF.”

Earlier this week, a controversial recording of Levinstein speaking in front of several hundred graduates of a different paramilitary academy surfaced. In the video, Levinstein is heard criticizing female soldiers. “They’ve driven our girls crazy,” he said. “They recruit them to the army. They enter as Jewish women but they’re not Jewish women by the time they leave.”
