Israeli Navy troops on Sunday opened fire at a Palestinian fishing boat that had crossed the designated fishing zone off the Gaza shores. One of the fishermen was severely injured from the gunfire and later died. Two Israeli soldiers were reportedly injured in the incident.
Last year, Israel and the Palestinian Authority signed a deal to allow Palestinian fishermen to sail as far as nine miles off the Gaza Strip shores. The IDF explained then that the decision takes into consideration the financial importance of fishing for Gazans.
About 40,000 Palestinians rely on fishing to make a living. It is an industry that creates jobs not only for the fishermen themselves, but for vendors and restaurant owners as well.
