Israeli pilot killed last night named his son after good friend who was killed in 2003 crash

Major (res.) David (Dudi) Zohar, who was killed Monday night when his aircraft crashed, was a good friend of a pilot who was killed in a 2003 crash. Zohar even named one of his son’s after his good friend, Amit Guterman, who was also the uncle of the pilot who was critically injured in last night’s crash.

Major (res.) David (Dudi) Zohar, who was killed Monday night when his aircraft crashed in southern Israel, is survived by his wife and four children. One of the couple’s children is named after Zohar’s good friend, fellow Apache pilot Amit Guterman, who was killed in 2003 when his aircraft crashed. Guterman was also the uncle of the second pilot who was critically injured in yesterday’s crash.

The connection between Zohar and Guterman began when they were in the Israeli Air Force’s flying school decades ago. They were drafted on the same day and studied together during their courses. Their friends described them as inseparable. After Guterman’s death, Zohar decided to name one of his son’s after him.

The Zohar family is having trouble coping with the horrible news. “Dudi was a pilot in the reserves,” said Zohar’s brother Shaul. “He didn’t have to go every week at his age but he went anyway because he loved it and he believed in what he was doing. He gave it his heart and did it the best way.”

Meanwhile, the IDF is still trying to figure out what caused the deadly accident. The initial investigation indicated that the two pilots reported a malfunction. However, they believed that they would be able to return to the base and successfully land the aircraft. In addition, it was determined that the malfunction that occurred last night during their flight was not related to the problem that ended up grounding the aircraft about a month and a half ago.
