Today (Wednesday), IDF Chief Military Advocate General Sharon Afek became the first senior-level General Staff officer to publicly admit that he is gay. “I never felt that my sexual orientation was a consideration in decisions that were made about me,” he said in an interview with the Journal of the Israel Bar Association.

“Since the beginning of my service in the IDF, I never encountered a discriminatory or abusive attitude regarding my sexual orientation,” he added. “When I was a young officer, times were different and I was afraid that it would go against me and that I would eventually hit a ‘glass ceiling’. Fortunately, that didn’t happen.”

“It’s important for me to act as a role model,” Brigadier General Afek said. “Many young men and women who are members of the LGBT community are on the verge of recruiting to the IDF or already serving in the IDF. Even today, in 2017, we still encounter ignorance and hatred. It’s important for me that those same young people know that there is no ‘glass ceiling’ to limit them in the IDF. Their success depends solely on them. The IDF is the people’s military and it embraces anyone who wishes to contribute and develop within in.”
