Top IDF official: Regional developments make war in 2018 more likely

A senior IDF general told Army Radio on Monday morning that the military has raised its level of preparedness due to the likelihood of a war on the northern front this year. “In the year 2018, there’s a potential for an escalation [of military conflict], not necessarily because one of the sides wants it but because of the developments [in the region],” he explained.

A top Israeli military official warned that the next war with Lebanon will be devastating for the Arab country. “The next war will be first of all difficult for the Lebanese,” Maj. Gen. Nitzan Alon, the head of the IDF Operations Directorate, said during an interview with Army Radio on Monday. “I don’t think that any Israeli citizen will want to switch places with a Lebanese citizen.”

Alon also said that it is highly likely that the next war in the north will not just be between Israel and Hezbollah forces. He explained that because of the changes in Syria and the Iranian involvement in the Middle East, other “players” could be pulled into the war and Israel will need to fight them as well.

“In the year 2018, there’s a potential for an escalation [of military conflict], not necessarily because one of the sides wants it but because of the developments [in the region],” Alon added. “This has led us to raise our level of preparedness.”
