The Tank Program Administration of Israel’s Defense Ministry, together with the IDF Ground Forces, began the first series of tests on the Namer armored personnel carrier (APC) on which a medium sized turret with a 30-mm cannon was installed for the first time. The APC is destined to add significant firepower to the IDF’s Infantry Corps in the future and “enable the infantry to be more independent, reducing the reliance on other units,” said Brigadier General Baruch Matzliach, head of the Tank Program Administration.

Matzliach added that the APC with the added turret and cannon will be better suited for an urban combat field. “The turret is not manned and does not enter the space of the APC, so the infantry carrying capability of the vehicle is not reduced,” explained Matzliach. “Its operation is expected to be simple and carried out by the APC crew. The turret will include, among other things, an active defense system that will give it significant new capabilities.”
