Channel 2 News has learned that there were were talks between the IDF and the family of Hebron soldier Elor Azaria, who was convicted of manslaughter after killing a terrorist. The goal of the conversation was to mediate between the family and the IDF in order to decrease tension and create trust between the two sides as well as to examine the possibility of lessening Azaria’s verdict.

In the meeting, it was suggested that Azaria should give up on appealing and to replace his defense team, which would permit the authorities to reconsider the soldier’s verdict, to lessen his punishment and to even pardon him in the future.

The IDF refused to relate to the matter. The National Union stated in response that they “support any initiative that would end the affair with the consent of the IDF and Azaria." Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman stated on his Facebook page today: “In regard to the many appeals to my office about Elor Azaria, I will say it again in order to make myself clear: Whoever wants what is best for Elor Azaria needs to sit now quietly and stop the noise. All of us remember that on the one side there is an excellent soldier and on the other side there is a terrorist who came to murder Jews. I do everything in order to preserve IDF values and for Elor Azaria. All of the rest is just harmful.”
