Former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon has revealed that two unusual military incidents put Israel close to intercepting Russian fighter jets that were flying too close to the northern border. In an interview with the Russian RIA Novosti news agency, Ya’alon said that in 2015, the Israeli Air Force detected a Russian fighter jet that was about to cross the border into Israeli airspace.

“We were going to intercept this plane knowing it is a Russian plane,” said Ya’alon. He added that following a phone call made to the Russian high command at Khmeimim airbase in Syria, the fighter jet changed its course.

Ya’alon also said that a year earlier, an Israeli fighter jet fired a warning shot at a Russian Sukhoi aircraft, prompting the pilots to change their course. According to Moscow, the incident was caused by a navigation error.
