Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas has ordered the Palestinian ambassador to the US to return to the West Bank in response to the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem.
According to Saeb Erekat, a senior member of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), the move was triggered by the relocation of the US embassy to "a disputed area." Abbas has also called the new embassy "an American settlement outpost."
On Monday evening, Abbas announced that the PA was "examining several options" regarding their response to the embassy relocation. "We will convene an emergency meeting where we will discuss these issues," he said, thanking world leaders who opposed US President Donald Trump's decision.
