Bennett tells interviewer that he thinks Azaria should be pardonedEducation Minister Naftali Bennett called to pardon Elor Azaria even if he is convicted.
Education Minister Naftali Bennett called tonight (Saturday) in an interview to pardon Elor Azaria, who is standing trial for shooting a neutralized terrorist. "I am following the trial and I have come to the following conclusion: Azaria, if convicted, should be pardoned immediately," Bennett stated.
"The soldiers should know that we are sending them against this deadly terror wave," he added. "I don't believe that one of our soldiers thinks that he can just shoot a helpless man. There is a precedent. In the historic Bus 300 affair, there was a similar situation to this one and a pardon was given before the trial. I think that because of the situation that has been created, Azaria shouldn't serve one day in prison."
In regards to his recent statement in which he called on his supporters to “sacrifice themselves,” he explained that he was misunderstood. He explained that he only meant that they must be committed to the cause.
