Bennett, Shaked: Israeli government needs to promote interests of Israelis, not Palestinians

After Channel 2 News reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has allegedly closed a secret deal with Washington to expand a Palestinian city in the West Bank’s Area C, Ha-Bayit Ha-Yehudi’s Naftali Bennett and Ayelet Shaked spoke out against him: “The Israeli government needs to promote the Israeli interests in Judea and Samaria.”

Right-wing politicians criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after Channel 2 News revealed that settlement leaders are accusing him of closing a deal with U.S. President Donald Trump to expand the Palestinian city of Qalqilya in the Area C part of the West Bank, which is under Israel’s complete control. Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett and Israeli Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked of the Ha-Bayit Ha-Yehudi party called the plan “a prize for terrorism.”

Bennett and Shaked said that even though Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman claimed that the plan is part of a “carrot and stick method,” it advances “the Palestinian takeover of Area C.” They added: “There’s no doubt that the significance of the plan worsens when compared to the very limited amount of construction the prime minister has approved for the Israeli communities.”

“The Israeli government needs to promote the Israeli interests in Judea and Samaria and not those of the Palestinians,” they continued. “The plan needs to be suspended until a new cabinet discussion or until 14,000 Israeli housing units in Area C have been put on the market.”

Lieberman’s office responded to Bennett and Shaked’s statements, accusing them of taking actions that resemble the attempts to tear down the right-wing government in 1992. “The announcement of the Ha-Bayit Ha-Yehudi ministers is very puzzling since the plan nicknamed ‘carrots and sticks’ was presented half a year ago to all of the cabinet ministers including the Ha-Bayit Ha-Yehudi ministers.”
