The chairman of the Hebrew Writers Association on Thursday sharply criticized Likud MK David Bitan, who serves as chairman of the coalition, for boasting during a speech that he has not read a book in a decade.

"It is no secret that public debate is becoming increasingly shallow, but this is a new low," said Tzvika Nir. "His remarks, even if they were meant as a joke, are an indication of the low level of some senior politicians, who are not afraid to show off their ignorance and lack of education."

In a Wednesday speech at a coalition gathering, MK Bitan included a botched quote of French writer Albert Camus while praising Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's leadership. He then told the crowd, "My spokesman wrote this. The last time I read a book was 10 years ago."

Bitan responded on Thursday to Nir's statement and said, "Tzvika Nir will not educate me on culture. What's truly disgraceful is the elite's contempt to anyone who doesn't belong to their group. These days, there are many ways other than books to be an educated person."
